Answer engine
An engine that answers the question instead of listing pages: Google's featured snippet, Alexa, Siri, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot.
Guide · AEO
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: the work of getting an engine to use your content as the direct answer to a question, instead of only listing it among links. Today's answer engines are Google's snippets, voice assistants and AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot.
AEO starts from a real question and writes the paragraph that answers it better than anyone else: short, at the top of the section, under a heading that repeats the question, with structured data that tells the engine what it is about. It works for Google's snippets and for AI engines, and it is the practical base of GEO.
In marketing AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. The same letters also name the Authorized Economic Operator status in customs, and the ticker of a clothing retailer: different things, not covered here.

The work on content and structure so that the engine picks your page as the answer and cites it as the source.
The paragraph the engine shows, or reads aloud, instead of a list of links. It is the unit of work of AEO.
Order matters: without the right questions the rest works in a vacuum.
Start from what customers actually ask: search autocomplete, support tickets, Search Console queries. Each question is a page or a section.
The answer goes first and stands on its own. The rest of the section explains, but nobody should need it to get the answer.
A heading that repeats the question in the asker's words helps the engine match the section to the search.
FAQPage, Article, Product and Organization in JSON-LD, matching the visible text, tell the engine what the page contains without guessing.
In robots.txt, Googlebot, Bingbot and the search bots of AI engines, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, must be able to read the pages you want cited.
Check whether you appear in snippets and AI answers for the chosen questions, and rewrite the sections that are not picked.
AEO sits in the middle: it builds on SEO and prepares the ground for GEO. The full comparison is in the SEO vs AEO vs GEO guide.
SEO gets the page into the results, AEO decides whether one of its paragraphs becomes the answer. A good ranking helps, but on its own it is not enough.
AEO aims at one answer at a time. GEO looks at every answer AI engines give about your category and counts how many name your brand.
