Guide · Google AI Overviews
Google has no switch to turn off AI Overviews: the AI-generated summary is part of Search and cannot be disabled from your account settings. You can still avoid it reliably, with the Web filter or a default search engine that skips it. This guide covers the four methods that work for searchers, what site owners can do and the tricks that do not help.
As a user you cannot disable AI Overviews, but you can stop seeing them: use the Web filter under the search bar, or set Google's address with the udm=14 parameter as your default search engine, which always opens plain links. As a site owner you can keep your text out of the summary with nosnippet or data-nosnippet, but you also lose regular snippets.
From quickest to most durable. None turns the summary off for good, but the last two remove it from every search.
After a search, tap Web among the filters under the search bar (sometimes under More). Google shows links only, without AI Overviews and without image and news boxes.
The Web filter maps to the udm=14 parameter: an address like google.com/search?q=word&udm=14 opens results without the summary. You can save it as a bookmark.
In Chrome: Settings, Search engine, Manage search engines, Add, with the URL https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14, then Make default. From then on every search from the address bar comes without AI Overviews. Edge and Firefox allow the same.
The Google app has no option. In the phone browser the Web filter and the udm=14 search engine work as on a computer.
The same controls as snippets apply to AI Overviews. Think about what you give up first: they also limit how the page appears in regular results.

HTML attribute that excludes only parts of a page, for example a reserved price or legal text, leaving the rest citable.
Caps the characters Google may reuse. A low value limits how much of your text reaches the summary, and also your chance of being cited as a source.
A site kept out of the summary is not among its cited sources, often the most visible links on the page. For most sites the opposite pays off: getting cited.
Plenty of advice promises to switch AI Overviews off. These do not do what they claim.
AI Overviews started as a Search Labs experiment, but they are now part of Search: turning off Labs experiments does not remove them.
Blocks use of your content for training Gemini, but has no effect on AI Overviews, which depend on Googlebot.
It sometimes hides the summary, but it also excludes pages containing the word ai and changes the results. It is not a setting and it is not stable.
They remove it from the page, they do not disable it: Google still generates it. And the extension has to read every search you make, so choose whom you trust.
